Why do I need an appointment for an ultrasound and not an X-ray?

Ultrasounds require appointments because they often need preparation, take longer and involve real time assessment by a trained sonographer and sometimes a radiologist. X-rays don’t usually require preparation and are quicker, which allows for walk in availability. Both X-rays and ultrasounds are performed by highly trained imaging professionals who focus on accuracy, safety and patient care.

It can feel like an extra step, but referrals are a legal requirement in Australia under the Radiation Safety Regulation 2021, Schedule 6.
